Tokyo, Procrastination

Last night I dragged my husband to see Mummy 3.  I had read a few reviews that panned the movie, but I really liked the other two.  See?  I obviously don't have very high expectations.  Then I thought, "hey, lots of other people have seen the movie and how bad can it be?"

Answer:very bad.

I think the premise had some promise.  I enjoyed the idea that the setting was in China.  I like that Alex grew up to be an adventurer.  That's a no brainer.  I attribute the suckiness of these two movies to two main problems and maybe a minor third.

Problem number one:  the story was HORRIBLE!    This movie is an excellent example of a potentially intriguing (please remember I have low standards) plot that was ruined!  The writer obviously had no brains when writing Rick and Evie's dialogue and the reintro to their character was BORING.  Note to writers, just because you have no brain, don't assume the same for the audience.

Problem number two is the actor who played Alex.  I saw people in Dr. Who fan flicks at Yokohama WorldCon (science fiction convention) that had better on-screen charisma than this fella.  Keanue Reeves may be the king of dead delivery (I may never recover from laughing at some of the lines uttered in Speed-- and not because they were meant to be funny) but at least the man has on-screen charisma.  One reviewer was exactly right when he wrote that Alex (Luke Ford) looks to be the same age as his dad.  Kudos to Brendan Fraser for looking hot.  Anti-kudos to the casting agent.  Anyway, Ford had no visible chemistry with the other actors and none with the audience.

Minor problem number three has to do with Evie and I don't know if it's only a writing problem or acting.  I'll give Maria Bello the benefit of the doubt since I honestly think that she didn't have a lot to work with.  The Evie of this movie seems to be like she had a personality transplant.  I found myself wondering, "Who are these pod people and what happened to the characters I used to really enjoy?"  Sadly, that applies to the Rick character as well.  Shame on the editor for including the stupid fly-fishing bit.

The special effects were nice.  I expected that.  I have sat through some pretty crappy movies because of special effects (I'm looking at you here, Transformers).  The yetis were kind of fun but annoyingly superfluous. Jet Li was good but his special effect of being covered in clay didn't really transfer visually as well as the Imhotep did. But how bad does the story have to be before you don't really care about SFX?  Well, now we know the answer, don't we.

I'll tell you the one part of the movie I thought was good-- Michelle Yeoh.  I think she is a great actress and really enjoyed any movie I have ever seen her in.  For me, she was the only really authentic character of the movie. Maybe it's because she wasn't really bogged down with crappy dialogue so she could really shine.

I'm kind of sad that Michelle Yeoh seems to get mainly action movie roles.  Granted, she is really, really good at it.  I loved her in Sunshine 2057.  It's got some action, but she's not a kung-fu hero in this movie.  She was just a great actress.

Final summation:  Mummy 3-- don't waste your time or money.  It's not even good enough for me to fold my laundry to.

I took my boys to see this movie.  They really liked the first ones.  I was disapopointed also.  I was disappointed that Rachel Weisz wasn't in the movie.  Why didn't they wait for her to be available?  I'm with you, I liked the China setting, the yetis and Michelle Yeaogh.  I thought it was the way Alex talked that bugged me the most.  How did he have such a strong New York accent with a British mom and American dad?  The movie was almost a parody of the other movies.  Maybe they'll just stop now.

I read that Rachel Weisz choose not to be in the movie.  She is a smart, smart woman.  I read somewhere (some movie website) that there were creative differences between her and the movie makers (not sure who particularly).

Some people looked at John Hannah's and Brendan Fraser's appearance as a sell-out to dollars.  I think they were a bit self-sacrificing and laid a bit of their career at the alter of this movie.  I'm glad they participated though.  I felt sorry for John Hannah.  He is a great actor and a funny guy I think, but ya gotta give a dog a bone if you want it to have something to get his teeth into.

I really don't like Luke Ford now.  I will definitely not be seeing anything in which he appears in the near future.  I thought he was that bad.  I probably don't have to worry.  I doubt this movie will garner him any work.

Did I mention I thought he was awful?

I still think it was better than the new Indiana Jones.

Brandon F. had no chemistry with the new woman, and frankly, she grossed me out.  She's not attractive at all, and I kept thinking, POOR BRANDON having to kiss THAT....ew.

The son was sucky as you said, and even the guy who plays Evie's brother, can't think of his name...he is usually SO MUCH FUNNIER.

Liked the special effects tho.

And HEY, I loved Transformers.  We watch it all the time...the acting, the action, I thought it was all good..I especially love the parents....heh.

Oh well.  I just had to sit through animated Star Wars/Clone Wars with my 5 year old.  I was the ONLY woman in the entire theater...just a bunch of dad's with their kids, and some nerdy looking older teens.

Man, talk about a waste of time.

Shesh.

I wasn't too thrilled with Indiana Jones and the blah blah blah either. The best part of that movie for me is that I got to watch it in Hong Kong 1 month before it came out in Japan.  Also, Hong Kong theaters are kind of cool.  They still have ushers helping you to your seat and the best warm caramel popcorn ever.

So you loved Transformers, huh?  Heh heh.  I can see it.

The Clone Wars sucked?  I was planning on seeing it.  I have a pretty high geek threshold so...  But my husband has a very low geek threshold.  If his mocking of my geekiness wasn't so funny we'd have some serious problems.

I thought the movie was pretty good (of course, I'm a guy) but I do agree his son was corny, his wife was not anything like the first one and he just didn't seem like he wanted to do the movie. All in all the story line was cool, Jet Li was not to bad even though he did not get to do a lot of ass-kicking. The special effects could have been better considering the latest in technology and previous mummy movies. Still I enjoyed it, I dont think it was a waste, just not the best money spent on a movie.

The Clone Wars sucked?

Well it just seemed superfluous to me. If you were reading the Star Wars books/screen play...this would occur sometime after Anikan becomes a Jedi, but before he hooks up with Princess A. And it'd be maybe one chapter.

And they made an entire movie out of it.

Too anecdotal for my tastes.

Oh I want to see the new Vin Disel movie...Babylon A.D.....and I also want to see Death Race...I will probably go this weekend and see Death Race....and next to see Babylon A.D.

I REALLY wish they'd make another Riddick movie.

They are without a doubt, my all time favorite movies EVER.

Chronicles of Riddick was really an interesting concept.  That Underverse religion was some freaky stuff.

I just saw stuff about Babylon A.D. on the internet last night.  I probably won't be able to see it for ages because I don't think it's showing anytime soon here.  I've never heard of Death Race.  I will look it up.

I heard they are moving the Harry Potter movie back.  I'm actually happy about that.  It was going to come out a week and a half after I left Canada to go back home and now I will probably be back in Canada when it comes out!  Yay!

I agree...and the acting was fatastic! Especially that sexy black woman, whoa, what an actress.

Do you know I bought the dvd and the ending is different than when it came out in theaters? The ending on the dvd isn't as good. I like when the guy who wanted to be in charge says, "You keep what you kill."

In the dvd version Vin says it.

Not as good.

So you are from Canada?

You are referring to Thandy Newton.  Yes, she is good.  And Judi Dench! She is what makes the new Bond films for me. Vin Diesel... I'm still out on him.  I thought he was good in Knockaround Guys.  Canadian actor was the head bad guy and I think the sub baddie was Karl Urban (LotR).

I am Canadian!  Born is Saskatoon and raised in Alberta!

Ah! I earned my BA in Minot North Dakota, so went to school with lots of Kanucks. heh.

How in the world did you end up in Japan?

DETAILS!

The movie felt rushed to me, like they were going through the motions. It used nearly the same story line as the first two movies. The "new" Evie didn't help either, I think it would have been better to have killed her off, perhaps as some adventuring trip gone awry and that fueling the Frasier character for being against his son picking up after his parents. Not enough interaction with the young Asian girl and the son, she fell for him too quickly and in the process killed any potential for funny him vs her comedic action (that kept the first movie moving when the mummy wasn't on screen). Great concept - China too bad the story wasn't as rich as it could have been. They are running out of places in the world where mummy's exist. If they do one in Peru, I hope the parents aren't in it, and a new actor for the son is used (cause everyone will forget this current guy quick).

While this is probably very true, you'd have to pay me hundreds of thousands of tax-free dollars to even get me to buy a ticket to that flick.  And that's not even saying I'd plant my behind in the seat.
