Tokyo, Procrastination

Continuing my tradition of untimely movie reviews, here is mine of The Fountain.

I generally won't see a movie because of it's actors but Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz are beginning to change that idea for me.  I found these two imminently watchable and that is a good thing because this is a really intense movie.

The story line interweaves three different timelines with incarnations of the same character.  While it takes a bit of mental effort, it doesn't take too long to get caught up in the struggles of the characters-- particularly the contemporary ones. If you are the kind of movie viewer who goes for Stephan Segal-type flicks.  Don't bother watching.  You will be in too far over your head.

I think the movie is an excellent examination of the balance between searching for immortality and the acceptance of the role death.  The color palette, the cinematography as well as the story are really metaphor city. The intertwining of objects between different time periods is really helpful as well as beautiful.

I could probably go through this movie and really enjoy breaking it down and that's something I rarely do.  Usually, I just go, "huh" and walk off and do something else.  This one is really going to stick with me for a while.

I must be really out of touch with the movies these days, cause I haven't heard of this one. It sounds good, I will have to hunt it down.

Ditto.

But I do like Hugh so I'll look for it.

I just got the soundtrack on iTunes.  It's really great.  Very moody but not so "soundtracky" as something by Alan Sylvestri.

IMO a soundtrack can really make a movie, taking it to a whole new level.  That will almost recommend a movie to me before performance but not before FXs.

SFX were pretty good, too.

I was walking home today while listening to the soundtrack for "The Fountain".  It was just a little past sunset, the streets were kind of quiet but I could see a few people walking home or out walking their dog.  The air was still holding a bit of chill but I was bundled up in my coat and scarf.

It was such a beautiful, contemplative walk home with just a hint of melancholy with this music.

This movie was out a few years ago. The movie was released in 2006 in the US and in the summer of 2007 in Japan.  I missed it here that summer because I was in Calgary visiting folks.  I just saw it on a cable movie channel.
