I have pretty wavy hair (pretty functioning as an understated adverb here) that goes crazy in the humidity. Even if I wore a ponytail, bits of it around my ears escaped and curled up around my ears like the ghosts of princess leia's scary buns-do. I also got a sore head from contstant pony tails.
So I got a straight perm about six months ago. It was great! I had straight hair and it didn't go wavy again after two hours out in the humidity. It was STRAIGHT!!!! But now I have six months of wavy grow out starting at the roots of my hair. The waves are kinking the straight ends out at odd angles. The ends are also damaged giving me a rather tassel-coming-apart look. I also color my hair (this is the result of a hair coloring addiction stemming from a mis-applied highlights touch-up debacle that turned my brunettish hair Russian-bar hostess yellow... but that is a story for another blog) so now I have reddish hair with darkish roots with fraying blondish ends.
I can just scrape enough of my hair up into a ponytail (sigh...) to make do for a few more weeks. I am going to have get quite a bit cut off, I think and I guess I want to delay the inevitable. Living in Tokyo, most people are extremely well-groomed so it is embarrasing to have this kind of hair in ways that never occur to me at home. Well, that's how it goes.
